Carolina Panthers safety Xavier Woods fined $11,255 for late hit Cincinnati Bengals Tight end Mike Gesicki during the third quarter of the Bengals’ Week 4 NFL victory last Sunday in Charlotte, the league announced Saturday.
A flag was thrown out as Gesicki pleaded for it with an official, but it was recovered and Woods was not penalized. The result of the play was a nine-yard loss on Gesicki’s catch from quarterback Joe Burrow.
The Bengals led 28-14 when Gesicki was knocked to the sideline by Woods. After Cordell Volson’s offensive holding penalty on the next play and Zack Moss’ 10-yard run on the next play, the Bengals increased their lead to 17 with a 56-yard field goal by Evan McPherson.
Earlier this season, Dave Lapham, longtime color analyst for the Bengals’ radio broadcasts, told Kirk Herbstreit on the “In the Trenches with Dave Lapham” podcast that Gesicki’s attempt to catch a 15-yard pass by Burrow in the corner of the end zone during the second quarter of a Week 1 loss to the New England Patriots, it should have been considered a catch and a touchdown, according to the league itself .
