THE Denver Broncos got a big win against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football last week, en route to a 33-10 road victory.
Broncos Rookie quarterback Bo Nix attempted 26 passes in the game, targeting seven different wide receivers, tight ends and running backs.
Courtland Sutton, the team’s No. 1 receiver, didn’t throw a single target.
Denver coach Sean Payton explained in his Wednesday press conference that this was not intentionally part of the game plan, but simply the way the game played out.
“The best thing about Sut was after the game he didn’t flinch,” Payton said. “We have to continue to find ways because he’s certainly a great weapon for us. It was kind of like that… There were a handful of calls that were intentions where he was primary, and he was Whether it’s media coverage or a rush, it can change. We’ll continue to work on this.
Shortly after Payton’s media availability, Sutton spoke to reporters and he had a perfect reaction to not getting any targets in New Orleans.
“We won, that’s all that matters at the end of the day,” Sutton said.[A] big victory. The ball carriers had a very big game. [The] the offensive line blocked their butts. I think it was all hands on deck. We all participated in the running game. It was fun to watch them go wild. I think we had about a 6.4. or 6.1 [yard per rush] average, or something like that. It’s amazing when you can run the ball so effectively and efficiently.
“It’s hard to be selfish in this situation. If they want to stay in two high levels, [coverage] and challenge us to throw the ball, we will show you we can do it. That’s what we did. It was really fun to watch and participate in.
Sutton is team captain for a reason.
The Broncos totaled 225 rushing yards against the Saints, their highest total in a single game since 2013. It proved to be a winning formula on Thursday and Sutton will never complain about his victory.
“I’ve been talking to you for years at this point and you all know that if I go out there and have a 10-catch, 200-yard game and we lose, who really cares at the end of the day?” » said Sutton. “Selfishly, it’s a cool number to put out there or whatever, but at the end of the day we’re trying to make the playoffs and have a chance to play for the Super Bowl.
“The stats are cool. I know they will come. I’m not too stressed about it. I know we have a long season ahead of us. I just feel like it will get better with time and There’s nothing to stress about. At the end of the day, winning games is what we want to do.
Denver is 4-3 after seven games. Next up is a home game against the Carolina Panthers.
