Last week against the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants Second-year cornerback Deonte Banks showed a lack of hustle while pursuing Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Banks admittedly abandoned the play, saying he could have made the tackle but chose not to. It was an incident that warranted some discipline, but Banks ended up starting Monday’s game against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

After a missed tackle on Steelers running back Najee Harris just before halftime, Daboll had seen enough. An exchange then took place on the sidelines in which the coach told Banks he was being replaced by Greg Stroman, a player the Giants recently removed from the practice squad.

Banks said after the game that he didn’t know why he was taken out of the game in the second half.

“I think he said it was missed tackles, I guess,” Banks said. via New York Post. “He really didn’t tell me what was happening, he just told me to stay ready, I guess…I didn’t really think I was playing bad, but it’s not my choice.”

Banks was criticized not once, but twice, for his lax approach on certain plays. Against Dallas this season, Banks appeared to give less than necessary on a long reception from Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb, who hauled in a 55-yard touchdown.

Position coach Jerome Henderson called Banks to the sideline after the Giants lost the game by five points.

No word on future cornerback status, but Banks is a former first-round pick and the Giants are building their secondary around him. If he can’t provide the leadership needed to make that happen, it’s just another log to throw on a team’s growing dumpster fire.
