Dolphins, Cowboys trade pitch sends former Pro Bowler to Dallas

The Dallas Cowboys’ 2024 season is on life support, as the team is 3-4 and has lost two straight games. Mike McCarthy’s team has been disappointing through seven games, and a Super Bowl or bust year for Dallas hasn’t gone as planned so far.

One of the main reasons for the Cowboys’ disappointing campaign is the lackluster rushing attack. The team is last in rushing yards per game (74.1) and had no ran for over 20 yards this season. If Dallas wants to turn around its interrupted season and compete for the NFC East crown, they must find a way to establish a competent running game.

The Cowboys running back room is terrible, as Rico Dowdle is average and the tandem of Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook is past its prime. The offense needs a new face at the position, and Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports suggests Miami Dolphins veteran Raheem Mostert as trade target for Dallas.

The Cowboys’ season appears to be over, but they are only 3-4. It’s not too late. They’re not going all-in as was said a few months ago, but no team needs a running back more than Dallas. They passed on Derrick Henry, saying they couldn’t afford him, and their cheapness at the position is evident. The decision here should be for Alvin Kamara to go to the Cowboys, but the Saints gave Kamara a contract extension, a sign that they will retain him for some stupid reason. Mostert is 32 and cheap enough for Jerry Jones to fit in, and the Dolphins should find reps for rookie Jaylen Wright. And the 2-5 Dolphins shouldn’t hang on to a 32-year-old running back anyway.

Mostert is dealing with a chest injury and is off to a slow start in 2024, but the 32-year-old is still a dynamic playmaker who can contribute solid production in the rushing and passing attack. The former undrafted free agent has 197 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in four games this season.

Despite a rough start to the 2024 campaign, Mostert is coming off a career year in 2023, totaling 1,012 rushing yards and a league-leading 18 rushing touchdowns. The former Purdue star played a pivotal role in Miami’s high-powered offense, showing he’s still a productive player in his 30s.

The Dolphins are 2-5, and the season is likely going nowhere, so getting some value for a veteran running back would be a smart move by general manager Chris Grier.

The Cowboys should pursue Mostert, as the 2023 Pro Bowler’s explosiveness and versatility would fit perfectly in Kellen Moore’s offense. Additionally, Mostert benefits from an affordable contract, and a Day 3 pick should be enough to seal the deal.

This trade is a no-brainer for both teams, as the Dolphins would receive some capital in exchange for an aging running back, while the Cowboys would get a short-term solution for their most pressing need.
