THE San Francisco 49ers left their 38-10 blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers with a handful of injury issues, but head coach Kyle Shanahan had some positive news on quarterback Brock Purdy during his Monday conference call .
Shanahan told reporters that Purdy had some light throwing Monday and the pain has not returned to his shoulder, which is a good sign for his chances to improve heading into Week 13. Purdy missed Week 12 in due to a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks. He was limited in practice throughout Week 12, then was ruled out Friday with an injury report.
This week, he will have a day off on Tuesday with the possibility of returning to training on Wednesday.
With the 49ers’ playoff hopes on life support, Purdy’s health could be the biggest factor in determining whether they have a chance to get back into the playoffs. The fact that he made positive progress on Monday is a good first step towards his return.
Updates on defensive end Nick Bosa and Trent Williams were less optimistic. Shanahan said both are still day-to-day, although their status for Week 13 remains up in the air.
Shanahan also had updates on the players who participated in Sunday’s game.
Two offensive linemen, left guard Aaron Banks and right guard Dominick Puni, were assaulted during the game. Banks is in concussion protocol. Puni has a knee problem and the team is awaiting an MRI.
Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott is also in the concussion protocol after leaving the game early.
Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir is also dealing with a knee issue that required an MRI. The 49ers are waiting for these results. Lenoir has been their best defensive back this season, and losing him would be a huge blow to their secondary. If he can’t go, rookie Renardo Green would likely move over instead with Isaac Yiadom and potentially Charvarius Ward starting on the outside. Ward is still returning after a long absence due to personal tragedy.
The 49ers return to the road in Week 13 to visit the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football.
