Kyle Shanahan had a witty response when asked if 49ers power forward Nick Bosa would face the Chicago Bears this Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.
“I’m not God,” Shanahan told reporters. “I think he has a chance to play this week. So I think that would lead to better luck [of him playing] every week. But I don’t know the answer to this question.
The 27-year-old supported a hip injury in a Week 11 game against the Seattle Seahawks and has not played since. San Francisco’s defense has been reeling in recent weeks, unable to do much of anything and letting opposing quarterbacks post huge numbers.
Getting Bosa back would be a huge boost, but the 49ers have other problems that his return wouldn’t solve. Missed tackles and failed missions tormented the unit in recent weeks.
At 5-7, San Francisco has low playoff hopes, but he would need to win and get some help to get back into the playoffs. A win on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium would go a long way in righting the ship heading into the home stretch.
With a tough matchup against the Bears coming up, the 49ers will need a beefed-up performance from the defense, with or without Bosa.
