Why 49ers GM Lynch finds Shanahan criticism and rumors ‘comical’ originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
John Lynch hears the noise and all he can do is laugh.
The 49ers enter Week 14 of the 2024 NFL season fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive with a disappointing record of 5-7two games back in the NFC West with five regular season games remaining. After losing three games in a row – including two pitiful blowout performances against the Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills – there was plenty of criticism. intensified around coach Kyle Shanahansome calling for his dismissal.
Lynch finds the review ridiculous and defended his head coach during his weekly interview KNBR “Murph & Markus” appearance.
“I found the whole discussion about Kyle pretty comical,” Shanahan said Friday. “We’ve won four of the last five division championships. We’ve been to two Super Bowls. The norm here is to win championships and we haven’t been able to do that, I understand that. But we have a great head coach and The fact that people are talking about it, I find it comical.
“We are 100 percent behind Kyle and what he brings to our organization. Like I said, we are focused on [Chicago] Bear and do everything we can. That’s where Kyle is and that’s where all of our focus is. »
San Francisco is currently 11th in the NFC and last in the NFC West before Sunday’s home game against Chicago (4-8).
Injuries and tragedy have derailed the 49ers’ season, from Ricky Pearsall going down just before the regular season to season-ending injuries to Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey to Charvarius Ward and Trent Williams tragically lost their children.
But even though their chances are slim, it’s not over yet for the defending NFC champions.
“I really think what [Shanahan] it means that we have not earned the right to be called good [as last season]” Lynch said. “You are what your record says you are in this league, and it’s not very good. So I think we’ve been through a lot as a team, this current team with a lot of things that have happened to people in our organization. The injuries, the tragic circumstances, these are ultimately just excuses.
“One thing I can tell you is that I’m proud of the way this group has stuck together, supported each other. The other thing I can tell you is that history It’s not yet written. We’re still working, and we’re still working and playing.
Shanahan and Lynch are in their eighth season in their respective roles within the 49ers organization.
The last time the 49ers missed the playoffs was in 2020, and they’ve only done so three times in the Shanahan-Lynch era.
A lot of uncertainty hangs over the team this season, but one thing is certain: Lynch remains loyal to his man.
