The New England Patriots sat rookie quarterback Drake Maye for the first few games of the season before turning the offense over to the third overall pick.
Since then, Maye has impressed, as he has handled the challenges of running an NFL offense better than expected for a rookie who spent the first month of the season watching Jacoby Brissett from the sidelines.
Still, Maye knows he still has plenty of room to improve in the future, as he recently spoke about how he’d like to improve over the offseason.
“Learn the coverages, learn how these defenses try to attack me or how they try to deal with us offensively,” Maye said during a recent “Unlimited access to the Patriots“I think learning more about what they do on the other side of the ball is only going to help me run checks quicker, get the hot routes quicker, get in and out of plays quicker . I think all of that will help later… I think after the season, I think it might be something that you’re always trying to improve on as a quarterback.
In his nine appearances (eight starts), Maye completed 67.2% of his passes for 1,696 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a passer rating of 87.0.
If he shows signs of his potential without having the proverbial answers to the test, it’s easy to imagine how good he can be as he learns.
