The knee injury that sidelined Miami Dolphins Offensive tackle Terron Armstead for most of the team’s 32-26 victory over the New York Jets does not need surgery, coach Mike McDaniel told reporters Monday.
“It’s all about rest,” McDaniel said of Armstead. “You may have seen his frustration level in trying to contribute in this particular match and that’s something he can’t control. I was very proud of how he handled it all because ‘He’s probably at a new level of maturity to handle this stuff. I think we’ll let it cool down a bit.
“He was trying to will himself [to compete]. I just made it very clear that you shouldn’t waste your time trying to be a superhero.”
Armstead, 33, played just five snaps Sunday before being replaced in the lineup by second-round rookie Patrick Paul. The CBS broadcast showed Armstead sitting on the bench, seemingly on the verge of tears.
The Dolphins have held Armstead out of practice for several weeks now and he has been listed as questionable in the team’s last four games. However, he started all four games and barely missed any time before his early departure on Sunday.
Despite the injury, Armstead continued to play at a high level on the field. Pro Football Focus credited him with allowing just one sack on 394 pass blocks and he is one of only three offensive tackles in the NFL with a score above 90.
Paul was credited with allowing two presses in 49 blocking passes, Sunday against the Jets. The Dolphins allowed no sacks.
