Aziz Al-Shaair I won’t come back for it Houston Texans until the Week 18 finale against the Tennessee Titans.
He also faces other contract issues as Houston prepares for its Week 15 matchup against the Miami Dolphins.
Al-Shaair suspended for three games for hit against Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrencewill lose his next three game checks, but that’s not all he’s losing in terms of salary.
According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, Al-Shaair’s $9 million guaranteed salary for the 2025 season will now be automatically forfeited due to the suspension. In total, Al-Shaair will lose $9.34 million due to the $300,000 they will lose over the next three matches.
THE Texans signed the sixth-year linebacker to a three-year deal last offseason for $34 million, $21.5 million of which was guaranteed. Since the $9 million base salary for 2025 is automatically waived, Houston now has the option to release Al-Shaair after this season at no cost to the team.
But will they do it? According to Jones, no. Houston believes Al-Shaair is an anchor for DeMeco Ryans Defenderse and will remain a part of the organization as a defensive captain for the foreseeable future.
“He’s part of our plans for the future,” Texan said a source told Jones.
That money could be recouped if he makes the final 53-man roster next season, but the difference is that it won’t be guaranteed. According to the contract, the $9 million “shall be immediately deemed VOID AND VOID from the outset and in its entirety, whether or not the 2025 Guarantee was earned in accordance with its terms at the time of the player’s default.”
Jones mentioned that Houston couldn’t use its own discretion and fill the void. Overall, this is a moot point since Houston knows Al-Shaair is part of his foundation.
If he wasn’t, general manager Nick Caserio and Ryans would not have been so vocal when it was announced that his suspension would be confirmed by the league office after a hearing with Ramon Foster, NFLPA representative.
“We’re talking about some comments that have been made about his character, about the person he is, about his intentions, from people who, frankly, don’t know anything about Azeez Al-Shaair,” Caserio said. “And for the league to make some of the comments they’ve made about lack of sportsmanship, lack of coaching ability, lack of attention to the rules — frankly, it’s embarrassing.”
