Buffalo Bills coach McDermott is never one to point fingers when things aren’t going well. Just like his quarterback, he is a leader who strives to be better, recognizes his mistakes and works to improve. The Bills defense posted one of its worst performances of the season last week, and coach McDermott made an admission during an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.
Breer writes: “That includes what he saw in the week leading up to Sunday’s showdown in Detroit, after, McDermott said, ‘I probably didn’t prepare them the way I needed to’ for the game against the Rams . And it really came alive, from his own perspective, how much he was looking forward to getting back to work with the guys.”
Although the Bills defense allowed 42 points and over 500 yards of offense to the Lions, they did just enough to keep the Lions trailing early on. They forced the Lions to punt on their first two drives and the Bills offense took a 14-point lead, from which the Lions were unable to recover. The score difference was only six points, but the Lions were chasing the Bills from the kickoff.
The Bills defensive backfield is dealing with a rash of injuries with Damar Hamlin, Taylor Rapp and Rasul Douglas all out. Buffalo also lost Matt Milano and Dorian Williams during the game. The team was only able to practice once in the week leading up to the game due to a severe snowstorm. All things considered, Coach McDermott had these guys ready to go and as a result, they were able to pull off a huge win while still chasing the Chiefs for the top AFC playoff spot and that coveted bye in the first round of the playoffs. .
