Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was fined $5,628 by the NFL for wearing mismatched cleats that were not “in the team’s constitutional colors,” the NFL said Friday. the Associated Press told a person close to the league’s decision.
The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the NFL had not disclosed the fine, which stemmed from Hurts wearing Air Jordan cleats in two different shades of green during the Eagles win 27-13 against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
The Nike subsidiary behind the shoes shown on social networks that he would pay Hurts’ fine.
“We pay the fine. You can’t ban greatness,” Jordan Brand said on X.
Hurts said this week he was supposed to wear Jordan Columbia 11s, but the delivery didn’t arrive on time. He took pictures on a lark at a photoshoot with mismatched cleats on his feet and decided he liked the look enough to play that way last Sunday.
“I hope they arrive soon,” Hurts said Wednesday of his Jordans.
This wasn’t the first time this season that Hurts wore two different cleats.
He was forced to play with mismatched cleats on October 28 against Cincinnati when one of its greens Air Jordan 4 PE came out during a run down the sidelines. But Hurts had tied the laces so tightly that he couldn’t easily get the cleat on and was forced to burn a timeout to find a replacement shoe. He changed into Jordan 11 white.
“I had to go to Jalen Two Shoes a little bit,” Hurts said after the game. Victory 37-17 on the Bengals.
This time around, Hurts wore a dark “midnight green” shoe to match his jersey and a “Kelly green” shoe throughout the game. He often changes shoes at halftime.
