THE Cleveland Browns are restarting their search for a new offensive coordinator with an internal candidate, tight ends coach Tommy Rees.
According to OBR’s Brad StainbrookRees will have the first chance to fill the vacancy left by the fired Ken Dorsey. Not only that, but Stainbrook reports that the interest is serious.
Mike Vrabel, who spent a season consulting with the Browns, is also rumored to want Rees’ services as offensive coordinator, regardless of which position he chooses to accept.
This was Rees’ first season with the Browns after spending most of his college career as an offensive coordinator. He was a point guard at Notre Dame and Alabama before jumping into the NFL waters.
Coaching tight ends in Cleveland usually comes with secondary responsibilities as a quarterbacks coach. Under head coach Kevin Stefanski, the Browns have had just one quarterbacks coach: now Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, and he was promoted only to not accept position elsewhere.
So we’ll see. While Stefanski likely takes over the game, Rees could opt to follow Vrabel anyway for the chance to have that responsibility.
