There are three names officially on The Star’s interview schedule. One is a familiar face who will take some time to prepare for the playoffs to connect with his old team, and the other two are standout defensive players who bring tons of experience to the table. But Cowboys Nation can’t help but talk about several other possibilities – like whoever is apparently arguing over lousy money at his college… or whoever wouldn’t have done it. technically even signed a contract at his current stop…or the one that came out of nowhere and said absolutely nothing about his apparent candidacy. All this, while another former Cowboys coach that no one talks about reminds everyone that he has a pretty stellar resume of his own.
Elsewhere, Chicago rolls out the red carpet for Mike McCarthy, and we wonder if he has emerged as the real winner after a lame duck last season in Dallas. Plus, we explore some of the ways the Joneses have already mishandled this coaching search, we look forward to who has the inside track to be the Cowboys’ backup tight end in 2025, and the offense gets two important weapons in Dane. The Cowboys are expected to reconnect with their former backup quarterback/QB coach/offensive coordinator in a virtual interview Friday. Once thought to be being groomed for the head coach’s office, he will now have the chance to show that a year in Los Angeles and another in Philadelphia have prepared him for a return to Dallas and to this specific promotion.
As the Cowboys request an interview with Kellen Moore, you’ll want to understand Jerry Jones’ past with Sean Payton :: Yahoo Sports

Sean Payton has always been one of those who escaped Jerry Jones in 2006. This may help explain why Jason Garrett stuck around for so long and even why Jones tried his best to retain Dan Quinn. And that could give Moore an advantage in discussions with the team now. Executives who have interviewed Moore call him “super impressive” and almost universally believe “he will be a head coach one day.” Jones may not want to let that day happen with another club.
Is Kellen Moore a viable candidate for the Cowboys head coaching job, or is he just familiar? :: Dallas Morning News
Some fans would see Moore’s tenure as a return to stability and familiarity; others see this possibility as even more vanilla mediocrity. He’s creative and collaborative, but he also has a gentle personality and should be relatively inexpensive. But no one knows if all that makes him the favorite this time around.

Leslie Frazier won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Bears’ legendary defense in 1985. He won another as an assistant in Indianapolis, part of a long coaching career that saw him occupy Minnesota’s top job for more than three seasons. Frazier hasn’t been a head coach since 2013, but he’s been active on the interview circuit for years and has a wealth of experience at numerous stops.

Coach Prime, Colo., at odds over ‘extra money’ amid NFL interest? :: SI.com
Reports out of Boulder suggest that Sanders approached the school’s athletic director for more money “for NIL and his team,” but Coach Prime “met some resistance.” It was previously said that Sanders would “almost certainly” take the Cowboys job if offered, suggesting that the conversation with Jerry Jones wasn’t just about creating leverage in his current job. Colorado closing its purse strings could make it even more willing to act.
Jason Witten declines to comment on Cowboys head coach’s overture :: ProFootballTalk
Witten declined to comment this week when asked if his name was in the running for the Cowboys head coaching job, but he acknowledged the ” intrigue ” of the situation. Rumors persist that the former tight end is seeking an unspecified role on the coaching staff, even if it’s not the top spot.
Former Patriots player says Dallas Cowboys job reportedly attractive to former NFL coach Bill Belichick :: Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Belichick apparently hasn’t signed his contract with UNC yet, so former Patriot Rob Ninkovich says, “I’ll never say never” when it comes to the idea of the legendary coach taking the reins at Dallas. “It’s the Dallas Cowboys, it’s America’s team, it’s history,” Ninkovich said. “You have a receiver, you have a crazy pass rusher and you have the ability to come in and potentially just use your knowledge to maximize the team’s potential. Of all the teams, I think Dallas would be the most interesting .and an attractive team to go to.
Here are 5 ways the Cowboys have already botched their head coaching search :: Cowboys Wire

Jerry Jones loves drama, but he also has a habit of ruining it. He clearly kept Mike McCarthy a year too long… but he also didn’t extend him, leaving him a lame duck all season. Then he waited too long – for no reason – to finally drop the axe. Contacting Deion Sanders and letting Jason Witten’s name surface only muddied the waters…all in the name of making headlines. All of this makes the Cowboys look like a very unserious franchise.
In a Jerry Jones-led split with the Cowboys, Mike McCarthy came out on top :: Yahoo Sports

Despite the flaws that made him replaceable in Dallas, McCarthy’s stock appears to have risen throughout the rest of the league for his tumultuous time with the Cowboys. He came in as a recycled head coach who was almost universally criticized in 2020, then put the team back on a winning track that made a Super Bowl window at least feasible, even if it was never seized during his mandate. He now leaves Dallas as a truly coveted high-end asset on the head coaching market. He’s now more Jimmy Johnson than Jason Garrett, and this could be McCarthy’s biggest victory.
Bears reportedly rolling out red carpet for Mike McCarthy :: SI.com
The Bears apparently used “private accommodation” to transport McCarthy to town on Wednesday, a detail described as a “deviation from previous team protocol.” Another report says things went so well that McCarthy spent the night in Chicago “then went home early” on Thursday.

What’s next? Backup TE role heats up in Dallas :: The Mothership
Jake Ferguson appears to have landed the starting tight end spot (despite a tough year in 2024). Luke Schoonmaker stepped up his involvement in year two, but that may have been because John Stephens Jr. couldn’t stay healthy. He could push for playing time, but Brevyn Spann-Ford and Princeton Fant also saw good stuff.
2025 NFL Mock Draft, Rounds 1 and 2: How far does Travis Hunter go? Which teams are taking QBs? :: Athletics
Draft guru Dane Brugler likes that Dallas is looking to complement CeeDee Lamb in the first round, selecting wide receiver Luther Burden III from Missouri, who he calls “a running back after the catch.” (But they bypass Ashton Jeanty, a true running back, to do it.) They get a boost in the backfield in the second round, however, with another Ohio State running back, TreyVeyon Henderson.
