Teddy Bridgewater has more playoff passing yards than the Saints in 4 years

It’s been a crazy month for Teddy Bridgewater. A few weeks ago, he was celebrating a big win in high school football after coaching his Northwest Miami alma mater to a state championship. Then he signed with the Detroit Lions as a backup quarterback, and on Saturday night he was called up to face the Washington Commanders after Jared Goff had to sit out for a brief injury evaluation, having was hit during an interception return.

With many of his old people New Orleans Saints with fans (and teammates and coaches) cheering him on, Bridgewater threw his first pass in a playoff game since 2015, gaining 3 yards with Jahmyr Gibbs on the catch, to convert a 2nd and 1. That’s more than yards the Saints offense has made in the playoffs in the last four years combined. On the next down, star Jameson Williams rushed for a 61-yard touchdown on a trap play.

And that shows how disappointing the last four years have been for the Saints. They didn’t even qualify for the playoffs, let alone gain yards or score points. Whether it was Sean Payton, Dennis Allen or Darren Rizzi who coached them, the team built by Mickey Loomis was not good enough to continue playing in January. This must change. With a crucial week or two of head coaching interviews ahead of them, it’s critical that Loomis and the Saints get it right.
