Detroit’s poor defensive performance has no bearing on Aaron Glenn’s candidacy

DETROIT, MICHIGAN – JANUARY 18: Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn of the Detroit Lions looks on during the first quarter against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Divisional Playoffs at Ford Field on January 18, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

The Detroit Lions fell out of the playoffs faster than expected and gave up 45 points to the Washington Commanders, although seven of them had an interception returned for a touchdown. This left many football fans on social media wondering how this loss impacted Aaron Glenn’s bid for head coach.

The truth is that this should have no bearing on his standing with teams. He is currently believed to be the favorite to land the New York Jets or New Orleans Saints head coaching vacancies. You don’t go from being the favorite to being completely questioned.

From an audience perspective, this is a great example of how quickly people forget. Glenn was praised for Detroit’s stifling of the Minnesota Vikings’ offense two weeks prior. It’s a what-have-you-done type of business for me lately and fans tend to have a well-timed short-term memory. Teams won’t do it.

One of Glenn’s most notable accomplishments on his resume was his ability to deal with injuries. In the playoffs, being behind a lot of players usually comes back to bite you even if you did well in the regular season. The situation got worse during the game when starting cornerback Amik Robertson left the game early.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk raised a good point. The team the Lions lost to is led by a man who gave up 48 points in his last game as defensive coordinator in the playoffs. This is not a sample of a single game, good or bad. This is Glenn’s body of work. And what he has achieved with the Lions in recent years remains impressive.
