The defensive coordinator of Kansas City Chiefs, Steve Spagnuolo, thinks new Detroit lions DC Kelvin Sheppard could be a special coach in the NFL.
Specifically, Spagnuolo told journalists for Super Bowl festivals in New Orleans on Monday that he thinks Sheppard could be head coach.
“If I could make a mini projection, [Sheppard] Will be a head coach in this league, in my opinion, “Spagnuolo said.” He was one of the smartest players I had in New York, and we had the chance to get it. “”
Sheppard played for Spagunolo for the Giants in 2016 and in part from 2017. The Lions appointed Sheppard to replace the former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, promoting Sheppard after four seasons of secondary coaches in Detroit.
“He looked very much like Antonio Pierce that I had there in New York earlier, and when Kelvin came there, I thought he just galvanized all guys with his football intelligence and the way he played the game, “said Spagnuolo on Monday. “And you can see him now as a coach now. I knew he would always be a coach and very good.
Sheppard is one of the many new positions for the Lions in 2025 after the departures of Glenn, Ben Johnson and other assistants who continued to take promotions elsewhere.
The success of Spagnuolo in New York earned him a coaching concert for the Rams of St. Louis from 2009 to 2011. Since then, he rebounded from a handful of teams in defensive roles to the landing in Kansas City in 2019.
