Détroit Lions Director General Brad Holmes spoke with “ The Insiders ” of NFL Network of the Indianapolis Congress Center, and addressed the rehabilitation of Aidan Hutchinson, the challenges of extending as many draft choices and the impact of the many injuries of the 2024 season.
Here is all Holmes said to the NFL Mike Garafolo journalist.
You have changes in the coordinator. But the guys you know. How do you make sure they keep the continuity of what you have had on both sides of the ball, this was such a success?
“Yeah, I really thought that Dan had done an excellent job and reconstituted two large coordinators who left, who were excellent coaches that I know will succeed. But to make the call of Kelvin – who is with us since the first day, he is ready to do. To be in a position to do that.
You have formed this team in the image in which you wanted this team to be. You have a lot of guys now that you will have to start turning around and being rewarded. I mean, these are good problems!
“These are good problems to have, but you turn around and you look back, and it’s like:” There is an invoice to pay “. In the moment, it’s like: “Oh, you have Penei Sewell, and you have two first -round choices (in 2022), and you still have two second round choices (in 2023) which are essentially two (first -round choice).” It’s like, ‘wait, it is seven first round choices that we all love, seven first -round choices that we all love.’ ‘It’s like, we would like to keep these guys. But then you have Kerby Joseph in the third round, Amon-Ra St. Brown in the fourth round. It starts to add up. It changes some of the decisions you want to make in a free agency. We have already started this work and this preparation to make these necessary adjustments. But yes, we have to do what we have to do. »»
You lose an Aidan Hutchinson when he goes down. You can’t replace this. How much did it hurt last year?
Look, as GM, you know that attrition is coming. You know that injuries are coming. And that is why you are really sort of sort of depth, depth, depth. But, you just hate players. Like Aidan, I don’t think anyone would say that before, he was on a defensive player of the year a sort of potential season. But look, I’m not worried about Aidan, in terms of man, he attacks his rehabilitation. It is also ahead of the calendar. We all know that he had a serious injury to the University of Michigan who knocked him out for a while. And he returned an even better player. We actually talked about it in the training room after his injury. We are all on the same wavelength. And I have no doubt that he will continue his ascent. “”
When you are looking for a type of Lions type, what are you looking for? Can you see it here? Is it mainly on the band? I mean, can you look at it, guys’ eyes and see him? Because you have done a good job to get the guys that match your culture.
“Yeah first, I will give a lot of credit to our scouts from the region, who have already done a lot of research before arriving at this point. We already have an idea from an intangible background of the guys that we think we would like to acquire. But yes, to make them so that it does not correspond and if it does not correspond. You must simply continue to stack.
I have to imagine that your head coach is a large part, because he can also sniff this. How many comments does it give you throughout the process that is invaluable to you?
“Me and Dan are in locking with this list! Hundred percent. And you know, whether it is a free agency or the project. I mean, just before we even come out here, we just traveled the guys he looked at independently. But I looked at them independently. And we are just matching them for special coaches who are really good evaluators.
#Lions GM Brad Holmes joined me for the initiates on @nflnetwork To talk about a few subjects, including the contract extensions that started last year with much more to come: “These are good problems, but you look back and it’s like” guy, there is an invoice to pay. “” pic.twitter.com/b439odfpz
