THE 49ers of San Francisco ended the Deebo Samuel era this offseason when they shipped the 2021 All-Pro to Washington commanders in exchange for a fifth round choice.
A choice of fifth round is not a bad return to a job for a player who was likely to be released anyway, but the 49ers have a chance to transform it into theft if they can strike the 148th overall selection they have acquired in the agreement.
The teams generally do not seek to strike a home run with their choice of fifth round. The simple fact of finding a contributor in this range is a great victory for a team. However, the history of the project of the 49ers under the director general John Lynch and the head coach Kyle Shanahan are strewn with great successes which lend a certain optimism, they can maximize the return for Samuel by finding an all-pro player in this range.
Although there are great successes for them on a 5th century, there are also important oscillations and failures. Here is an overview of the history of the 49ers of fifth round choices at the time of Lynch-Shanahan:
2017
Te George Kittle, n ° 146 Globalwr Trent Taylor, n ° 177 in total
If the 49ers can find a player of caliber kittle to any position in the fifth round, it would be a significant boost to their hopes to rebuild a competitor of the Super Bowl in the long term.
2018
CB DJ Reed, n ° 142 in total
It is impossible to know how Reed’s career would have proved if he had stayed in San Francisco instead of being canceled in 2020 due to a chest injury and picked up by Seattle Seahawks. If they find a player who was as good as Reed in his career, they would be more than satisfied.
2019
LB DRE GREENLAW, n ° 148 in total
Curiously, Greenlaw went with the same number of choice as the 49ers received commanders. It is a fifth round home run that the 49ers would like to knock again.
2020
OL Colton McKivitz, n ° 153 in total
McKivitz was selected to play guard, but he found a house as a starting tackle for the 49ers. They are not the huge successful guys like Kittle and Greenlaw, but McKivitz has dug a good NFL career as a selection of fifth round.
2021
Ol Jaylon Moore, n ° 155 Globalcb Deommodore Lenoir, n ° 172 Salle
This is how the teams are building Super Bowl contenders. If San Francisco finds a Lenoir or Hufanga with the choice they have obtained for Samuel, they will be in an ideal place.
2022
CB Samuel Womack, n ° 172 in total
Uh oh!
2023
CB Darrell Luter, n ° 155 Globalde Robert Beal, n ° 173 in total
The two -year yields are not good here with one or the other of the players.
2024
No choice of fifth round.
So can they maximize Samuel’s return?
They can! Everything they did with their screening for the Round 5 perspectives in the first part of Lynch-Shanahan’s mandate worked. Choices like Kittle, Greenlaw, Lenoir and Hufanga can have a significant impact on the direction of a franchise. If they can even find a player of starting quality like McKivitz, it would be a huge victory in his quest to restore their list with affordable young talents. This would also help them maximize their limited return for Samuel.
