From 2016 to 2023, the corner half of Washington Commanders Jonathan Jones was one of two Super Bowl championship teams as part of the New England Patriots.
During this section, the franchise that would become the commanders made the playoffs twice – one of them last year – and did not reach the big match, not to mention winning one.
For a player on the list of patriots, it was probably not even a thought he would play here, something new Washington cornerback, Jonathan Jones, admitted to his introductory press conference with local media.
“I’m going to be honest with you, I didn’t think it would even be part of the plan. Just see the turmoil that was going on here and all that this organization had to face,” said Jones. “Seeing how fast it turned, I think I was one of the biggest surprises for me of the speed with whom they were able to enter good people, a good staff … Everyone here scouts, everyone had to play a role in the reversal of this place and they did a good job.”
Now that the turnaround is underway, the super bowl winners are more likely to want to play for commanders. Much of this, of course, is the quarter-Arrière Jayden Daniels. Despite being a defensive player, Jones knows how important it is to have this type on the other side of the list, which he learned as a teammates with Tom Brady in recent years with the Patriots.
“It brings a lot of confidence. It brings confidence to a team, a defense. Your goals change,” said Jones. “Sometimes, in defense, you will have the impression of trying to win the game (and) that it must be on you, and you will spend a point to-there are certain teams around this league us, in New England, for a certain time, Kansas City, while the defense, your work is like, let me recover the ball at our offense, in the quarter-back, then if you have the last optimization, will know this game. Having a player like that.
Last season, Washington was able to put the ball in Daniels and the hands of the offensive at the end of the games, and that worked well for them.
This year, however, commanders would probably like to become one of the teams that end the match with their attack on the knees instead of driving to win scores. Not because it is not fun to win this too, but because it is much less stressful and more durable, if defense can gain as much weight as the offense.
Washington hopes that Jones will be part of the creation of a defense capable of doing exactly that.
