While the Pittsburgh steelers and the New York giants continue to sit down and watch a handful of quarter-back options less than stellar for the 2025 season, the Vikings of Minnesota would have progressed with their chosen starter: the first draft of the first round JJ MCCARTHY. This would seem to close the door on a pursuit of Aaron Rodgers – except that this is not the case.
There is still an important business that is not resolved.
Sign an experienced backup to join McCarthy next season.
Just in this week, the Vikings gave all the indications they want another experienced quarter -back associated with McCarthy – first extending a short -term offer to Sam Darnold, which he refused before signing with the Seattle Seahawks, then with an attempt to keep Daniel Jones on a one -year agreement, which he refused to sign with the Indianapolis colts. Then came the last consideration of a prosecution of Rodgers, which, according to a source of the league, prompted at least two teams to wonder if the Vikings would be open to the exchange of McCarthy.
This answer was no. But the answer whether the pursuit of rodgers is dead? Well, there is a Tell on the list that is very suggestive.

Wednesday, the Vikings had not made significant contractual openings towards a safeguard of the veterans clearly defined and experienced, although it is a priority behind McCarthy. The only other quarter of the list is Rypian Brett, and it does not correspond to this mold. A player who does it is Carson Wentz. The same Wentz which has a large starting experience, has just supported Patrick Mahomes with the Chiefs of Kansas City, and becomes familiar with the offensive scheme of the Vikings coach of Vikings, Kevin O’Connell, after spending the 2023 season to support Matthew Stafford with the Rams of Los Angeles.
Although Wentz is not the only backup that the Vikings can continue, its free availability of the agency currently enters a phase of implementation or withdrawal, the Browns of Cleveland currently holding it as one of the quarter-back-briefs options of the team. Wentz notably rode the director general of the Browns, Andrew Berry, during the 2019 season, when Wentz started 16 games for the Eagles and Berry was the vice-president of the staff of the team players.
The urgent question – and the real canary of the coal mine with regard to the conclusion of a pursuit of Rodgers – is whether the Vikings are now moving to get Wentz or another veteran backup to associate with McCarthy. If they do not do so, the availability of Rodgers will persist in the Minnesota franchise until he retires or signs with another team. And right now, no one through the league has the feeling that it happens quickly.
Those who have been part of the circle of Rodgers in the past – especially during its transition outside the Packers of Green Bay and in the New York Jets – said that there was nothing other than the silence of this offseason. One indicated that it is possible that only Rodgers and his agent, David Dunn, have an idea of the place where the QB mentality is located, or if he changed his perspective since he had said to the jets that he wanted to continue playing in 2025.
What East Clear: Steelers, Giants and Quarterrière colleagues of Libre Agent Russell Wilson are in a model of detention until a kind of clarity emerges. Wilson is another option on the table for at least the giants. But two league sources told Yahoo Sports that Russell’s potential to return to the Steelers was less certain, no matter what Rodgers does, and would probably be completely out of the table if it was simply the decision of certain staff of offensive coaches. For this, the change would probably take certain conversations inside the building and a total lack of other QB candidates.
All this means that for the moment, Rodgers is still the main target for the Steelers and the Giants, with persistent availability for the Vikings as long as they have not put the final touch on their quarter room. This is why it could flow for a while. As long as the Vikings have a headquarters for an open veteran quarterrier, Rodgers could wait to see how their intersane passes program develops with McCarthy. And as long as Rodgers waits, the Steelers and the Giants are likely to wait too, without other open avenues to exploit the Rodgers to make a decision.
Until some doors start to close in an obvious and undeniable way – starting with the Vikings sign another quarter to support McCarthy – this expectation could last a while.
