Looking back on the second season of CJ Stroud for Houston’s Texans, it was far from perfect.
Associating turnover problems, the various Houston protection gaps and a disappointing overall production of what Stroud had achieved during his offensive year campaign in 2023, the Texans quarter left fans wanting a little more of their aspirant signal of franchise after a first season on the scene.
Now, after an offseason with changes around the Stroud offensive and support cast, there is certainly an advantage to see the arrow pointing in the right direction for the 2025 season to come. However, with these game improvements, this could exert significant pressure on Stroud for his third year pro.
Fox Ben Arthur sports analyst Stacked the ten best NFL players with the most to prove for the coming season, where Stroud found himself squarely in the new number mixture.
“After following his historic recruit campaign with a disappointing season of 2024, Stroud must show that he was as a first year pro,” wrote Arthur. “Last season, it was more prone to errors (16 gifts in 2024; nine in 2023) and seemed to be affected by the bad protection of the Texans passes. His passing numbers last season dropped at all levels, including the completion rate, passing lessons, touchdown, interceptions, passing success rate, yards by compensation and the passer note.”
In Stroud’s defense, there were a large number of factors playing against his favor from the start of the season. His three best weapons in the offensive have been faced with a form of injury problems throughout the year, and protection against Houston passes significant steps back from what the Ohio State product had during his recruit season.
But now the necessary improvements have been added to the fold to provide Stroud with a much more stable surrounding structure. Houston has selected two new wide receivers during the first two days of the draft, the offensive line seems very different, and with it, Stroud can perhaps return to a level of production similar to what it has implemented during its first year on board.
The issues are raised for Stroud and this Texans offense next season. Time will tell us if this group can meet these noble expectations to reach a third victory of AFC South at the end of the year.
