Is he a WR or CB? Bo Melton of Packers could answer yes for both

Rob Demovsky is an NFL journalist in ESPN and covers Green Bay packers. He has covered packers since 1997 and joined ESPN in 2013. Demovsky is a double Wisconsin sports writer of the year, selected by the NSSA.

Green Bay, Wisconsin – Green Bay Packers could have their own Travis hunter, and his name is Bo Melton.

The backup receiver, which has played in 22 games in the past two seasons in Green Bay, has done something rarely – if ever – seen before in a packer practice: in the same exercise, Melton not only played his regular position, but also overthrew on the other side of the ball and took some corner clichés.

It was partly out of part after having cut Jaire Alexander and made some injured corners (Kalen King and Micah Robinson), but the coach Matt Lafleur really seemed to believe that Melton could play in both directions.

In fact, it seems that Lafleur has thought that for some time now – until Melton arrived in Green Bay at the end of the 2022 season, when he was signed by the Seattle Seahawks training team.

“He said to himself:” Are you still playing in a cornerback? “” Recalls Melton after training on Wednesday Minicamp, his second as a double -way player. “That’s when it made my mind for the first time. And then after that, I forgot, and now it came back. And everyone referred it.

“When you are there to play special teams and in a shot, you are on the corner side and you are there to do crazy things, to attach people, they like:” Yeah, you could play the database. “So, the situation in which we are now, it was like:” Let’s see if he can really do it. “I don’t care, let’s do it.”

Lafleur discussed the subject again last week after the OTA final of the Packers. When Minicamp opened its doors on Tuesday, Melton made his debut as a cornerback while wearing his white n ° 80 jersey in practice, where offensive players wear white and defensive players wear green.

“I know there is a lot of attention with Hunter there in Jacksonville with what he does,” said Lafleur about the bidirectional recruit of the Jaguars. “So we presented him a little, and he said he was ready to take up the challenge.”

Melton, however, wanted to clarify one thing: it is not Hunter, the second choice of the place, which played both the receiver and the cornerback in Colorado and should do the same in the NFL. In fact, Melton has not played in both directions in a match since his high school days in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey. His latest shots of all kinds at the hearth took place during his first training at Rutgers.

“Travis is a different athlete, as everyone knows,” said Melton. “He is a winner of the Heisman trophy,” won a lot of prizes. I’m not going to compare myself to someone who did this. But what I will say is that I like to run for days.

“I am very versatile. Some things that I like to do at Receiver can make me open for Wideout. Some things at the corner I have done that have shown this team, these coaches, that that [I] could probably work in Corner. It’s just something they want to look at. I don’t have a problem with that as long as everything is fine. “”

Melton also wanted to clarify something else: he is not even the best corner of his own family.

This title belongs to his brother, Max, a choice of second round of the Arizona Cardinals last year.

In fact, his brother was as surprised as anyone to discover that Bo was playing the corner of the packers this week, especially since BO kept a secret until Max saw clips on social networks.

Max’s reaction, by BO, was: “What is the F —?”

“I had to say to him:” Listen, guy, I can’t tell you everything. But yes, I will try it and see how it is “, added Bo.

At first, even some of Melton Packers’ teammates were caught off guard.

“It is different when you see a receiver coming there and that it bears the n ° 80 and you see it in an online exercise,” said the Packers, Carrington Valentine. “But when you see him start to do it, we like” Oh yeah, he had Melton blood, that’s for sure. “”

Imagine how much the quarter-arre Jordan Love felt when he launched a pass to Melton, then a few pieces later, Melton defended a pass of love.

“It was really confusing,” said Love. “During jogging, I mentioned that he seemed that BO was a receiver there, but he actually played in DB, so I was trying not to throw it away.”

It is not as if Melton had not had his moments as a receiver during his two seasons and more in Green Bay. In 2023, he made his first departure in career during the week 17 against the Vikings and caught six passes for 105 yards with a touchdown to become the first player of the packers since 2013 with 100 yards in reception and a touchdown during his first departure. He played in the 17 games last season but played a more important role in the special teams. In attack, he caught eight passes for 91 yards and wore the ball eight times for 54 yards when Lafleur used Melton’s speed at the end of the end and in motion games.

But with the addition of two recruit receivers – the choice of first round Matthew Golden and the third round Savion Williams – there is no guarantee that Melton would have a list place playing only the receiver, even if they like what he does as a basic player in special teams.

“We talked about it for a few years, just his skills and how versatile he is,” said Brian Gotekunst, Managing Director of Packers. “You look at him on [special teams] And you say to yourself: “Wow, it can probably be part of it.” I think it’s just something we’re going to look at and see if it’s a possibility.

“Bo is all we want with a football player with regard to his capacity as a receiver, certainly on [special] teams. If he is able to add to his arsenal, it really makes him, really precious for us. “”
