One day after Washington head coach Dan Quinn made the surprise announcement that the veteran goalkeeper Nate Herbig retired, the Commanders found a replacement. Washington announced the signing of Lucas Niang on Wednesday.
Niang, an offensive tackle of 6 feet 6 inches and 315 pounds, was a third round choice of the Chiefs of Kansas City in the recovery of the 2020 NFL. He played collegially at TCU. In five seasons of the NFL, all with the chiefs, Niang appeared in 33 career games, making nine starts. Niang did not appear in a match for Kansas City last season, spending most of the year in the training team before going out in November.

Herbig was signed this offseason to play guard, and he was fighting against Chris Paul, Julian Good-Jones and Michael Deiter for a place. The interesting part of Niang’s signature is that it is also a tackle. The commanders have several plated in the camp, including Laremy Tunsil, Josh Conerly Jr., Trent Scott and Andrew Wylie. Tunsil, Conerly and Wylie are locks to list 53 men, and Scott also has a great chance. There are also other plated in the camp.
Niang was a teammate with Wylie and Nick Allegretti with the chiefs and was one of two Super Bowl championship teams.
It will be interesting to see how many Washington offensive line editors are maintaining when he runs the list at 53 players next month.
