Eagan, Minnesota – The Minnesota Vikings will honor Jim Marshall by carrying a helmet decal throughout the season, according to the team owner and president Mark Wilf.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Wilf called Marshall, who died on June 3 at the age of 87, “the largest captain in NFL history” and added that the team also planned to recognize it as well as his family during the weekend of legends during week 3.
“No player in the history of this team saw the ideals of tenacity, camaraderie, passion and leadership that Jim,” said Wilf. “It was a calm but effective leader.”
Wilf’s feeling was shared by several other former Vikings, including the late legendary coach Bud Grant, who called him the “biggest Viking” in the history of the team.
Marshall was a member of one of the most dominant defensive lines in the history of the NFL, known as “The Purple People Earters”, and was appointed three times the second All-Pro team and twice pro Bowler before retiring in 1979. He was one of the 11 players to have played in the four appearances of the Vikings of Vikings.
“In our minds, he is the biggest captain in the history of the NFL and there is no doubt that he belongs to the renowned temple for what he has accomplished during his 20 -year career,” said Wilf about Marshall, who was induced in the Ring of Honor of the team in 1999.
