New Orleans – Sam Ehlinger made a hell of a final impression.
The fact is that it also made a solid first impression, all along spring before signing as free agent with broncos.
Now, Denver’s quarter 3 will wait for the next two days with dozens of teammates and more than 1,000 players across the League before the deadline of Tuesday to reduce lists from 90 to 53.
Ehlinger, who spent his first four seasons in Indianapolis before signing with Denver this spring, set up a solid terrain for broncos to keep three quarters on their active list.
He crowned it by obtaining almost three quarters at full speed during the victory of Saturday 29-18 on Saturday against New Orleans.
Ehlinger completed 22 of the 31 passes for 198 yards, with a touching of racing and fixed, an interception and six rushes for 25 yards.
“Sam did a fantastic job,” said head coach Sean Payton, who started his post-match press conference by categorically saying that he would not talk about the status of a player alignment before the deadline on Tuesday. “Some of his gifts are with his feet. His athletics. He has a little moxy and leadership for him that you obviously saw when he played at university.
“Turn, I saw him beat Georgia here in a big Bowl match. He did a good job.”
This did not have the kind of atmosphere of a sugar that led to the infamous Texas Declaration “back”, but he had real issues for Ehlinger.
The NFL rules are such that it is logical to keep three quarters. They all count against the list of 53 men, but the teams get a gift on the day of the match because a “third” quarter of emergency does not count against the limit of 46 active players.
For many teams, this discount alone could be sufficient to keep three. Broncos, however, think they have one of the deepest lists of football. Keeping three quarters potentially means submitting a player to a different position over the derogation, where he could draw the attention of other teams.
However, Ehlinger is not a one-week pop-up scenario in Denver. The staff of Broncos coaches and the Front Office loved him this spring and thought he had a real chance of developing after he appeared in eight games between 2021 and 2023 with the Colts and spent the Indy training team all year round.
“I have followed him since (Austin Westlake High), to be honest with you,” said a quarter-back quarter of Texas High School himself, at post earlier this month. “… You could say his leadership qualities at the University of Texas, the way he ran the ball with a certain tenacity.”
Webb said he had the impression of having seen Ehlinger d’Avantapame every year since he was in the NFL, while Webb has gone to play for Buffalo and the Giants of New York at Coaching for Broncos.
“And I was still like, guy, if someone spent a little more time with him mechanically or had an old quarter-rear that leads him, I think the best is to come for him,” said Webb. “When he was available and we needed a n ° 3 or a guy who could push our n ° 2, it was a fairly easy decision.
“We didn’t live a lot, but we continued it.”
Ehlinger said on Saturday that he had learned a lot so far and looked like a guy who hoped to stay on his current track.
“I think Davis is one of the best quarter of the league, and I think he’s on a fast way to do what he wants,” said Ehlinger. “Our conversations during the free agency, when making this decision, was that he believed in me. It was a difficult couple for the first years there for a little (in Indy), but he really believed in me, looked at the band and said:” I know what you are capable of and I want you to come and that you develop and continue to improve, learn a new system. “”
Now Ehlinger is waiting to see if he is on the list of 53 men in the future. Perhaps the Broncos will decide that they simply have no room for him. Maybe a team will call and mark a choice of draft in exchange for him.
The player and the team, however, seem satisfied with what the other has shown.
“Just this team in general, I think it is really well formulated,” said Ehlinger. “Organizationally, I think it’s top and bottom, one of the best organizations in the league. It’s great to be here and I really enjoyed it.”
This does not change the fact that Denver has to make 37 cuts on Tuesday afternoon.
Here are some quick threaders from other bubble guys who had notable Saturdays.
• Payton said the first to blush that he thought that Ballon Audric Estime (eight races, 45 yards, TD) ran hard and played well. However, Tyler Badie has also put a good footer with four races for 14 yards, four catches for 31 and a kick return of 46 yards. Blake Watson left the match with a left leg injury in the fourth quarter.
“I am lucky to be part of this list and I hope that I will be part of this list in the future,” said Conscue. “You just have to learn guys who are there in the room with you, and that’s what I did all this pre-season.”
• The defensive line player Jordan Jackson has already crossed this waiting game, and even if he made the list last year, the defensive group of this year is even deeper.
“It’s a little stressful, and it’s something you think about for the next 48 hours, but I am to the point where I leave it in the hands of God. … Coaches have difficult decisions to make. I’m glad I’m not them. “
He and Eyioma Uwazurike each had productive camps. Uwazurike finished with a burst on Saturday, recording a bag and four plated.
• Special teams are still the key to the list of 53 men and several players were in particular on the best units of Kick and Return of Denver. This group includes: Sam Franklin, JL Skinner and Devon Key and the second veteran Garrett Wallow interior. No guarantee, the four do it, but nevertheless interesting.
