What stood out at Colts HC Shane Steichen about the new DC Lou Anarumo?

As Indianapolis colts Head coach Shane Steichen was looking for his next defensive coordinator, what was standing out for Lou Anarumo and his plan?

“When I went through this process, I schematically looked at what teams do, what gave me adapted, and this is one of those guys for whom I got a lot of respect”, ” Steichen said at the NFL combines Tuesday.

Anarumo was nicknamed the “Crazy scientist” during his time with the Bengals of Cincinnati. Anarumo’s scheme is very malleable and capable of adapting quickly to what is necessary on a weekly weekly weekly given the opponent or to better adapt to the skills sets with which he must work on his defensive list.

Both on the cover and in a perspective of Blitz, Anarumo will cast a variety of different looks on the opposite offenses in order to keep them unbalanced – a tactic with which he found his share of success.

In the six seasons of Anarumo with Bengals, Cincinnati appears in two AFC championship games and would also win a trip to the Super Bowl.

“I think he did a hell of a job with this in Cincinnati,” said Steichen. “And pass and watch his game plans, the greatest thing I have seen over the years, he always has a plan to remove his best player. And so you enter these big games, or each time that may have a plan to win the game for that.”

With Anarumo in charge of defense, schematically, what we see on Sunday will be a little different from what we have seen in recent seasons. Although Anarumo is not blitz at the highest rate of football, it is a little more than what Gus Bradley did.

Regarding the coverage, we will see a mixture of principles of man and the area, more coverage-1 looks and a high-defense high level premium in order to maximize the defense capacity to hide what they do at the back.

“I think he does a good job of disguise things from the point of view of the cover, from the point of view of the rear, when and where and how he drives his pressures,” said Steichen.

“It is multiple on the back, a tight blanket, press stuff, which will be good for us, a good change for us. Excited to have it in our staff.”

GM Chris Ballard must add to Foal“The defensive list this offseason to help raise the game on this side of the ball. However, By hiring AnarumoIts scheme and adaptability can also help with part of this heaviness.

“Just by going through the interview process and being with him these last two weeks, he has great energy about him, and I think he will be able to really connect with our players and use the forces of our players,” said Steichen.
