Indianapolis (AP)-The Director General of New Orleans, Mickey Loomis, considers the 11-year-old veteran quarterrière Derek Carr as “a guy with whom we can win, and we are delighted with this”.
Loomis made these comments on Wednesday to a small group of journalists based in New Orleans who went to Indianapolis for the NFL screening combination.
Carr stayed two years on the $ 150 million over four years contract which brought it to New Orleans as a free agent in 2023.
He has 14-13 as leaving in two seasons with the saints, having taken 5-5 during a 2024 injury campaign. The saints went 5-12 last season, their worst record since he spent 3-13 in 2005-the season before the current coach of Denver Sean Payton and the QB Record Drew Brees joined the franchise.
They brought a Super Bowl title to New Orleans during the 2009 season, one of the nine seasons in which they made the playoffs during the Payton-Bree era.
Payton retired for a year after the 2021 season and was replaced by his former defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen, who was also the coach of the raiders when they drafted Carr outside the state of Fresno in 2014.
Allen was dismissed in the middle of the 2024 season and replaced interim by the special team coordinator, Darren Rizzi, who was also a finalist for the permanent head coach position who finally went to Kellen Moore, who was the offensive coordinator of the Super Bowl Philadelphia Eagles champion.
Carr was visibly absent from the Super Bowl festivities in New Orleans. And when Moore was presented as the saint coach on February 13, he seemed not engaged about Carr.
But at the harvester on Wednesday, Moore said that the saints “felt lucky to have Derek”.
“There is a large quarter of this league,” said Moore.
The saints are trying to create space under the salary ceiling for 2025. If the Carr contract was unchanged, it could count around $ 51 million against the ceiling next season, but New Orleans could convert part of the bonus carr salary which, for accounting purposes, could be practiced over several years – if the QB agrees.
“This is a large number,” said Loomis about the Carr contract. “So we are going to hope, to be able to maneuver.”
Carr completed 67.7% of its passes last season for 2,145 yards with 15 affected and five interceptions. He has been dismissed eight times.
Carr has missed three games in the middle of the season due to an oblique injury. A subsequent concussion and a left hand put his hand for the final match of the season.
New Orleans has won no match started by one of the Carr backups, the recruit Spencer Rattle or the second year pro Jake Haener.
