The Baltimore Ravens offensive was historically large in 2024, because they accumulated the third largest yards in a single season in the history of the NFL at 7,224 and becoming the first team to have marked 40 touchdown and 20 affected on the ground.
According to the offensive coordinator Todd Monken, however, the offense always has room to improve.
“There are a lot of things in which we can certainly improve,” Monken said on the podcast “The Lounge”. “Systematically, how we do it. How we practice. How we continue to put Lamar [Jackson] in charge. Go to a premium game.
“Everything was not yet exactly as you wish. Maybe the figures said that. But you always try to keep a step ahead, as best you can.”
Monken’s offensive was already good in his first season, while the Ravens ranked sixth in total of the yards and fourth in the score. His offense during the year 2 was at a different level, however, because Baltimore ranked first in total of the yards and third in the score.
A great reason for this success was the additional freedom granted to the quarter of the superstar Lamar Jackson. Jackson already having a year to learn the Monken system, the Ravens allowed him to adjust the game to the melee line, and he paid dividends. Thus, forward the 3rd year under Monken, Jackson should have even more control in the field.
“He won well [because] Not only is he a great player, but he is really intelligent, “said Monken.” There is nothing that Lamar cannot manage. It’s just about doing it again and again, we do it where it is second nature for him. Coming to what he likes, what we love, what we think is the best way to attack.
“The quarterrrière must face this and want it. As they change their games, they are now up to it. Some guys like that and some guys don’t. Lamar is more and more comfortable with that. He is really good in this area. We just have to continue on this road.”
Monken has done a fabulous job in Baltimore, as evidenced by his interview for several coaching jobs in each of the last two seasons. He and his staff know that Jackson is the engine that operates their offense, and they intend to make him a large part of the planning process.
“No matter how I see it or what I like. He must like it and must see it. If a player likes a room, he makes it work. It is the same thing with him … coming on a kind of common ground with that and that he feels comfortable with that. I think it’s just built over time.
“I think our staff does a great job. They pass this thing, and the players do. I can just call it and get a lot of credit that I don’t deserve. I have one of the best NFL jobs. Because if [the goal is] In the end, to win, be part of a large organization with an elite quarter that gives you a chance to win the Super Bowl every year, [it’s] Quite soft. “”
