The Kansas City chiefs had occupied off -season.
During this year’s free agency cycle, the chiefs made numerous acquisitions and relevance, while allowing many key parts to move away. As with any team, opinions differ in the effectiveness of each movement, and whether it was worth it or not in the first place.
Pro Football Focus published their favorite and least favorite movement of each team during the free agency, including Kansas City. Analyst Mason Cameron had concrete opinions on the movements made the most meaning and which Keep his head still scratching.
Taking first place was the re-signing of the second Nick Bolton. Captain of the playoffs, Bolton won his 4th season with more than 100 plated in total and has always been a large part of the defense of the chiefs. Signing an extension of 3 years worth $ 45 million, the defense of KC becomes monumentally better with it on the ground.
“The restructuring of the Patrick Mahomes agreement allowed the chiefs to keep Bolton, and they did so at a very reasonable contract value,” said Cameron. “Although his last two seasons were not as effective as his first two, there remains a key element of the defense of Kansas City and understands the plan of Steve Spagnuolo and how it works at the highest level.”
Bolton obtained a note of 64.0 pff in 2024, as well as a PFF war (victories above the replacement) of 0.07. Cameron judged the agreement as “good”.
However, there was a movement that was seated at the bottom compared to the rest: the signing of the tackle of San Francisco 49ers Jaylon Moore. The chiefs have long been lacking in the position of the left tackle, and this decision was an opportunity to return the story. Moore has accepted the terms of a $ 30 million contract over two years with more than $ 21 million guaranteed.
“Moore has admirably filled Trent Williams on the stretch of the 2024 season of the 49ers, winning a global quality of 74.9 pff, highlighted by solid measures as a blocking block,” continued Cameron. “However, it is a fairly expensive affair for a player with a limited experience of the NFL (just over 800 snaps in career). This ultimately leaves this unit in worst form in 2025.”
It was a bet for sure, but it could have come with a huge gain. Chiefs needed this problem solved quickly and to sign a person with real league experience rather than NFL’s draft seemed to be the right decision.
