The Carolina Panthers have made significant progress on the defensive side of the ball during the offseason, but the team took a step back recently.
This step back came in the form of Liberation of the veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, who was the team leader in the bags last season with 5.5.
Without a clowney, the panthers depend more on unproven players such as the recent choices of draft Nic Scourton and Princeley Umanmelen and the veteran DJ Wonnum.
With the panthers needing a more established player along the edge to complete Tershawn Wharton, Alec Sanner of Sporting News Carolina suggested trade with the Bengals of Cincinnati for Trey Hendrickson.
“Trey’s trade would do a few things for the team. First of all, it would make the defense formidable in a division where many would have them third when Derek Carr has retired. This would immediately put Caroline before the Falcons of Atlanta,” wrote Sanner.
“Then, second, that would remove a division chief who is looking for his last piece of the card to win another Super Bowl at Tampa Bay.”
Hendrickson and Bengals continue to go directly to a divorce of this offseason. Cincinnati and his Rusher Star Pass were unable to conclude an agreement on a contract extension and Hendrickson was clearly fed up With the process and refuses to play without a new agreement, which could lead to a profession.
Adding Hendrickson, who led the NFL with 17.5 bags in 2024 and has more than any other league player in the past two years, would be the final touch for the defense of the panthers.
Any trade for Hendrickson will probably start with a second round choice, which the panthers have in 2026. Carolina can also launch another choice in the package to obtain the agreement above.
From there, Carolina should extend Hendrickson with a big problem that will pay him between 30 and 40 million dollars a year, that panthers can manage.
Hendrickson’s acquisition would clearly take a lot, but if the owner David Tepper seriously concerns this franchise, he will make the effort to add a massive upgrade like Hendrickson.
