The Denver Broncos took a leaflet on the tight end of the Utah Caleb Lohner with their latest choice in the draft of the NFL 2025. At least, that seemed to be a leaflet.
Since the choice of Lohner, however, the broncos head coach Sean Payton has come much more enthusiastic That you would expect a seventh lap lark, we are going there-it-it-it. A former basketball star, Lohner brings with him exactly 57 shots of the experience of division I to a tight side, but his four college receptions have made a touch.
Lots of projection has entered the selection of Lohner. At 6 feet 7 inches and 250 pounds, the tools are there, but a year withdrawn from the wonders that work on the young broncos, Payton and his coaches have board for them when it comes to ending their inexperienced but talented recruit.
So far, so good, however – according to Payton.
“He’s coming. He’s fine,” said Payton about Lohner earlier this week. “There are things that are new to him, and then there are things that he gravitates so that I think he is further. He is fine.”
Starting in May at the Minicamp recruit, spending time in the presence of Lohner, with the way he is able to move to his size, had a “holy cow” effect on the broncos head coach. But the enormity of development work in front of the Broncos has never been lost for Payton when Lohner’s choice was made.
“Yes, we have to train and develop,” Payton said about Lohner after the project. “There are traits that excite me.”
Lohner makes a sacred weapon of the red zone. This is how UTAH used it, and at the next level, Payton probably has similar visions of sets of red areas with two dancing stallions in its head.
Lohner will always be compared to Jimmy Graham, not only because of the Payton connection, but because of their basketball history, their relatively minimal university experience and their size. Lohner has a long way to go before even sniff the level of Graham in the NFL, but he has an excellent model in the shade in Evan Engram.
The presence of Engram did not prevent Payton from giving Lohner cups of the Graham film to study, or even to put it in contact with the tight all-pro whole of the ancient saints of New Orleans. Despite its inexperience, the Broncos are trying to give Lohner all the tools and tricks to succeed.
When Payton talks about “new” things to Lohner, a good part of this is surely his blocking chops. This is something that will also have to come relatively quickly, if he wants to see the field as a pro, because no one studies at the Broncos headquarters.
Beyond Engram and Lohner, the Broncos still have the veteran Adam Trautman, Lucas Krull and Nate Adkins, as well as Newcomer Caden Prieskorn. If Lohner wants to avoid the training team and stay on the list of 53 men, he will have to jump Adkins and Krull to guarantee it.
Denver transported four tight ends to the initial list of 53 men last season, but Greg Dulcich did not last long in the countryside. There is almost no chance that five tight ends will be kept this year, so Lohner can help his chances of making the list of 53 men by usurping Krull or Adkins, but to be sure, he must put himself in front of both.
As talented and blessed, it is with its size, it will not be easy for Lohner simply because it has barely played the position. Again, 57 climages in total as football college football end and they all came during their last year after a long career as a basketball player at UTAH, Byu and Baylor.
Again, if Payton has a weakness for Lohner and does not want to risk it on the waiver, exceptions could be made, but these concessions are rare in the production sector which is the NFL.

However, Payton says that Lohner’s early assimilation in the NFL “arrives”. We will see what is happening the pads and crampons hit the grass at the Broncos training camp next month.
