Since the Green Bay Packers traded Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, many former Packers have followed him. Most recently, the Jets added Rodgers’ former top target, Davante Adams.
While predicting deadline trade deals, Cory Woodroof of USA Today predicted that the Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers would complete a trade to reunite former Packers teammates Royce Newman and Aaron Rodgers. Newman is currently a backup on the Buccaneers roster.
“The New York Jets lost guard Alijah Vera-Tucker to injury Sunday night. The team could find itself in a situation where it needs a new starter if Vera-Tucker misses significantly time,” Woodroof wrote. “Let’s say Rodgers is pressuring the Jets to go for Tampa Bay Buccaneers reserve guard Royce Newman, who played with Rodgers in Green Bay. Yes, New York is adding yet another former Packers player. “
Since Rodgers was traded to the Packers, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, Tim Boyle, Billy Turner and Adrian Amos have all played for the Jets. Allen Lazard signed with the Jets just before Rodgers was announced to join them.
It’s no secret that Rodgers enjoys playing with players he considers friends. Newman would just be a long group of players to follow the quarterback
In Green Bay, Newman started 16 games as a rookie. The following year, he started in six. Then in 2023, it debuted in just two. He was waived by the Packers before the 2024 season and signed with the Buccaneers. Newman made 22 starts during Rodgers’ back-to-back MVP campaigns in 2021 and 2022.
