Should the Chargers take a risky gamble on the recently cut former Pro Bowl WR?

The Los Angeles Chargers are in great shape right now, but expansion remains a clear need this offseason.

We must therefore mention Diontae Johnson again.

Againbecause Johnson was just released by the Baltimore Ravens after a brief and messy stay with the team after being acquired via trade at the deadline a month earlier.

Johnson didn’t see much playing time with the Ravens, then apparently refused to participate in a game when asked, leading to a suspension and time off the team.

Before joining the Ravens, Johnson caught 30 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns in seven appearances in Carolina. During his five years in Pittsburgh, he averaged nearly 78 catches per season.

The question now is whether the Chargers should make a move. Ladd McConkey is a star at wideout, leading the team with 69 catches for 960 yards and five scores as he battles multiple injuries.

Otherwise, no one was able to create separation against man coverage. Former first-round pick Quentin Johnston has flashed but continues to battle falling issues. Joshua Palmer has been touted as a trade candidate in reports. No tight end stepped up.

At this point, however, Johnson’s baggage might be too much. For better or worse, the Chargers’ current group was good enough for nine-plus wins, plus a likely playoff berth. By the time Johnson learned of the offense, it might no longer matter.

Now, next offseason? After the damage Johnson did to his actions before probably settling for an evidentiary agreement? This may be something the Chargers want to consider.
