That probably doesn’t matter to the New York Giants fan base, many of whom would immediately see the team continuing on its losing path to ensure they land the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. 2025.
But for head coach Brian Daboll, there are still two games left and he will need a quarterback for all of them.
But it remains to be seen whether he will stick with Drew Lock, who became the first Giants quarterback to throw two Pick-6s in a game since Eli Manning did it in a 2007 game against the Minnesota Vikings.
“I would say we are just done playing this game. We’re going to watch the tape and make our decisions,” Daboll said moments after the Giants suffered a 34-7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
Daboll said he doesn’t consider moving on to Tommy DeVito, who cleared concussion protocol this week and was named QB2, ahead of Tim Boyle, who arrived last week and actually looked the best of the three quarterbacks currently on the list.
“I let Drew fight,” Daboll said in explaining why he didn’t pull the plug on Lock, who saw a 7-0 second-quarter lead evaporate into a 17-7 deficit by midway. time.
“You know, see if we can make any improvements. At the end of the day, it’s hard to win a game when you turn the ball over three times.
Daboll was particularly angry with Lock during his first interception, for which the quarterback was entirely responsible.
“We had a change when the band came out. I left the meeting late. I went to see Malik [Nabers]tried to put him to the side,” Lock said.
“I saw him running there. The clock is ticking down. I tried to get the ball in my hands so I could do something with it, but I just couldn’t get our guys ready and I can’t make a bad play worse. Flag, nothing would have counted, I can’t do that. I can’t do this. I must keep it in your hands.
And what did Daboll tell him?
“Yeah, I just figure I can’t do that,” Lock said. “Everything he said to me was the same thing I felt in my head. We weren’t on two different planets about what he was saying, just obviously a little disappointed with that first turnover.
And what happened on the second interception?
“Broken game. I tried to get Malik [Nabers] I thought maybe we could try to get a photo before time ran out. I just didn’t get out of the group fast enough,” Lock said.
“Wan’Dale [Robinson] was my shortest route. He tried to throw the ball to him before the safety could cut him off, and he got it back. But like I said, you can’t make a bad game worse. Flag on, nothing was going to happen. I could have thrown an 80-yard touchdown. I just have to be smarter and keep that ball in my hands.
As the Giants continue to flop like a fish out of water this season, thanks in large part to the complete mess of the quarterback situation, Daboll was asked if he had any regrets about how the position has been handled this season.
“Yeah, we’re just going to try to do what we think is best,” he said.
