The biggest decision Pittsburgh Steelers What this offseason will do is which of their two starting quarterbacks will get a new contract and which will move on. Jeremy Fowler, ESPN NFL reporter spoke to leaders to make a prediction for each NFL team for this offseason.
As for the Pittsburgh Steelers, they predicted that the Steelers would draft Justin Fields over Russell Wilson and that they would in turn draft a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.
People around the league are torn on what the Steelers should or will do at the quarterback position. Russell Wilson’s experiment wasn’t a failure – he showed promise and gave the offense a boost mid-season. But he was hired to help the Steelers in the playoffs, where Pittsburgh lost again in the first round.
Some executives believe the Steelers could bring Wilson back. But Fields is 25 years old – 11 years younger – and has an explosive skill set that the team could build around…at least for one more year.
“I still think it could go either way,” one NFL scouting director said. “Part of me feels like they’re bringing Russell back. Either way, I expect them to draft a pretty high-end quarterback. They need someone who can be the long-term response.”
The Steelers select 21st overall in April, hardly a place to find an elite quarterback in a weaker class.
While we agree that the Steelers would be wiser to re-sign Fields rather than Wilson, the entire quarterback draft is a wild card. As noted, this is not a solid quarterback group at the top, so any player chosen will need time to develop. Additionally, if the Steelers go for Fields, a mid-level veteran could be in order as well as insurance, but it could be as simple as re-signing Kyle Allen.
