For years, the rivalry between Washington Commanders and the Philadelphia Eagles have been more one-sided than those old NFC East battles. Philadelphia dominated Washington for much of the 2000s, when it could be argued that the Dallas Cowboys became the Eagles’ main rival.
Things have changed. On Sunday, the Commanders will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. This is only the second time in history that these two longtime rivals have met in the playoffs. The last meeting took place during the 1990 playoffs, with Washington winning.
So, in preparation for the Commanders’ arrival in Philadelphia, some fans of the team decided to have some fun with a famous Philadelphia landmark. The Rocky statue was decorated with clothing emblazoned with Washington’s old name, the Redskins. Eagles fans were outraged, warning commanders that every time this happens, their team wins.
There is a recent story where the Eagles win when opposing fans “disrespect” Rocky. The two most recent examples are the Vikings and 49ers.
No matter what you read on social media, it won’t determine the outcome of Sunday’s game. Do we even know if it was Washington fans who did this? Maybe it was an inside job meant to ignite the Eagles. Even the Philadelphia legend Jason Kelce thinks it’s Eagles fans.
Sunday can’t come soon enough.
