The Eagles of Philadelphia are the new world champions of the NFL after their 40-22 victory against the Kansas City chiefs in the Super Bowl Lix on Sunday.
It was a dominant performance of Philadelphia.
But while the Eagles had the most dominant performance, Kansas City also did defensively, at least against the race.
Certain next generation statistics of the Super Bowl show some things to which Arizona cardinals should pay attention, aimed at reproducing them on the defensive level.
There were measures for both teams.
Stop the race without loading the box
The chiefs held the Saquon Barkley ball carrier at only 57 yards on the ground on 25 attempts. It was its lowest production precipitated since week 5, when the Cleveland Browns kept it at 47 yards.
Notable statistics are that the chiefs have done this while loading the box (more than 8 players at seven years) only 8% of the time. They only loaded the box twice in its 25 attempts and were able to limit Barkley, the best in the league in 2024.
Cardinals have often been with a lighter box this season, but were not great racing caps. Opponents have an average of 4.6 yards per attempt against them, 25th in the league.
Press the quarter-rear without additional rushers
This following statistic is breathtaking. The Eagles have not blitz even once in the Super Bowl, no rushing more than four players in the 42 drops of Patrick Mahomes. They generated 16 of these drops of these drops and dismissed him six times.
This ability to create pressure with only four rushers was the key to Eagles’ victory.
The cardinals, according to TRANCOLANT FOOTBALL ANALYSISgenerated the fourth lowest pressure rate in the league at 29.4%. They have blitz 25.3% of the time, ranked 15th in the league.
In comparison, the Eagles were 15th in pressure rate at 35%, but had the second lowest level in the league at 16.1%.
For the cardinals to take the next step on the defensive, they must be able to do these two things. The blitz is good, but it cannot be the only way to put pressure on the opposing quarters. And being able to stop the race without a busy drinking is ideal.
We will see if they can improve in one or the other competence during the upcoming offseason.
